Athaeus remarks

84/08/07 - سایت اطلاع رسانی فرش ایران - کارپتور

Six hundred years after the Xenophon, Athaeus, a Greek grammarian, spoke of a kind of persian carpet that was not used as floor covering. Athaeus was born at Naucratis in Egypt shortly before 200 A.D. and was renowned in his day. His monumental fifteen-volume work, entitled Deipnosophistai(“Authorities on Banquets” or “philosophers at Dinner”), is a collection of miscellaneous information about social diversions and he quotes from Some eight hundred ancient authors.

Describing the palace of auntiochus IV (King of Syria, r. 175-164 B.C.), Athaeus writes:” on the two sides [of the pavilion] were set a hundred gold couches with feet resembling Sphinxes…on the couches were spread purple rug made of wool of the first quality, with pile on both sides. He continues:” Smooth Persian carpet covered the space in the middle trodden by the feet, having beautiful designs of figures woven in them with minutes skill.

There are important points in athenaeus s remark. one concerns the difference between carpet on the couches and the carpets on the floor, which has not escaped Athenaeus s thorough observation and sharp eyes. Though both kind of carpets were soft, the couch carpets were made of “wool of the first quality,” and therefore different from the floor carpets, wich were only “smooth.” Secondly, the couch carpets were made with one color, purple, whereas the floor carpets had figures woven in them with minute skill.

The two kinds described by Athaeus are still very much the same today. Gabbehs with pile on both front and back have been woven in recent countries from top-quality wool and are still used as mattersses or a coverlets, and many long-pile weaves, including filiklis, are still dyeda single color. Also, carpets with beautiful figural designs are still processed for the floor.
Another important point in Athenaeus remarks concerns the difference usage of each type of rug.
From what he says, it can be concluded that rocks evolving from top quality of all well not sprayed on the floor but displayed on cookers for people to sit or lie and and enjoy the softness of this is a point mentioned by Xenophon and ladder commented On by both Jakob Eduard and Mumford Sam 150 to 100 years ago.
